The space shuttle mission ended successfully late on July 27, so it was time for me to leave the Space Coast for the time being. My plan was to visit friends and family on the East Coast. We just recently had the family reunion over the July 4th weekend, so I was planning on short visits and then getting back to Portland by the middle of August. Beginning on July 28, I headed north from Florida...
The first leg of the trip to visit Henry and Gigi and family basically took me up I-95. I drove from Cocoa, Florida, up through the Jacksonville area, through eastern Georgia and the Savannah, through South Carolina and most of the way through North Carolina. The pictures below show how similar the drive looked. What was much more impressive than the sight of the trip was how it felt -- hot! It was close to 100 degrees throughout the drive and I got a bit dehydrated and light-headed in the middle of the day's driving. This was as hot as I remember any of the driving so far this summer.

My long distance driving plan includes hitting cities at off-hours; I got back on the road early in the morning and got through North Carolina and then Richmond, Virginia before morning rush hour traffic. This left me just south of the D.C. Beltway at the time of the morning rush, so I ended up with a couple of hours to kill; breakfast and a newspaper pretty much did the trick and I wound my way around the Beltway and out onto I-270 inland. Within a couple of hours, if not less, I was at Henry's cabin.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing; the heat wave that dominated the East Coast weather for a couple of weeks forced us to seek out a Chinese restaurant for dinner and air conditioning. The pictures below were taken that evening after dinner. (At least I think they were.)
