June 26-28, 2001: Travel Page 1

This was my first long distance drive of the summer, beginning in San Diego and heading toward the Northeast.  My initial stop was going to be Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

I started out very early on the morning of June 26 in San Diego and got as far as Albuquerque, New Mexico (by way of Interstate 15 North and Interstate 40 East).  Here's a shot I took driving into the city from the west to the east:

Those clouds opened up right after I got into the Holiday Inn Express on the east side of downtown.  For some reason, I forgot to start my collection of gas station photographs that first day out, but the next day I got it going.  After sleeping during the afternoon and evening, I got up early the next day, June 27, and continued on Interstate 40 East to Oklahoma City.

The sky got very dark approaching Oklahoma City; it turned out there was a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the city.  With good luck and timing, I angled onto Interstate 44 which took me around the main storm and got heavy rain instead of hail.  From there, Interstate 44 took me through Tulsa and Springfield (Missouri) to a city called Cuba, Missouri, which is past Rolla on I-44 and about 100 miles outside St. Louis.

After grabbing some sleep at a hotel there, I got up very early in the morning on June 28th and took off for St. Louis.  Once I got to St. Louis in the wee hours of the morning, I got on Interstate 70 East, which would take me all the way into Pennsylvania.  South of Pittsburgh, I got onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which took me pretty much to Doylestown...

This is the station next to the Super 8 I stayed at in Cuba, Missouri.

BP station just west of Washington, Pennsylvania.  The traffic on I-70 East was a mess due to construction.

I got to Doylestown in the evening, which meant it was something less than 72 hours from San Diego to there...
