October 7-8, 1999: Columbia, Missouri to Fountain Valley, California

One more sleep-deprived drive. I left Oot's place in Columbia, Missouri, around 9 am Central time. By noon, I had reached the Kansas Turnpike past Kansas City. By 5 pm, I was back on Interstate 40 past Oklahoma City. And after crossing a couple of lines of thunderstorms, I really was going to stop for the night at around 8 pm in Amarillo, Texas. Like an idiot, though, I just kept going. I wasn't particularly tired yet, so I just kept going.

I got back an hour when I got to New Mexico and around midnight Mountain time I stopped for gas in Albuquerque. Eventually, I got tired, and I tried one of them "power naps" they talked about on the radio. About a half hour nap in a rest stop somewhere in Arizona. By then, I had got another hour back. I stopped in Flagstaff around 4 am Arizona time for a refill of gas. Just a bit after sunrise, I was back in California, where I took a couple of pictures, one of which was this:

I reached Barstow and the end of Interstate 40 around 9:30 am Pacific time and by 11:30 am, I was back at home in Fountain Valley.
