September 15-19, 1999: Houston, Texas to Chalfont, Pennsylvania

This page documents (well, sort of) my non-experience with Hurricane Floyd. I'd planned on driving from Houston to see Henry, Gigi, and the kids that weekend (the 18th and 19th). In July, it was straightforward to drive up the East Coast, but this time Hurricane Floyd beat me to northern Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and points north.

September 15th: Houston, Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana

The first day out of Houston was a short day, as I was now pretty sure I wouldn't be driving up the East Coast. So I only drove for a few hours that afternoon, getting just outside of Baton Rouge (Denham Springs) around 6 pm. From there, I decided to turn almost due north, which would give me some options in terms of where I would go and when. Did I mention that it's love bug season again in the South? My love bug hunting license is shown on the right. As for actually hunting, it's pretty simple really: you drive fast and the bugs do all the work.

September 16th: Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Marion, Illinois

After talking things over, the new plan the next morning when I left Baton Rouge was to drive north to Interstate 70 and then east to see Stacey and Dave and their girls first and visit Henry and Gigi and family the next weekend. I got as far as southern Illinois.

September 17th: Marion, Illinois to Plainfield, Indiana

The next day I drove from southern Illinois up to I-70 just east of St. Louis and then to just outside of Indianapolis, Indiana. Meanwhile, Floyd was unloading on the East Coast.

September 18th: Plainfield, Indiana to Bedford, Pennsylvania

This was a longer drive. I got up early, drove through Indianapolis, the rest of Indiana, through Ohio, the panhandle of West Virginia, and into Pennsylvania. I took a couple of sunrise shots:

In the middle of the afternoon, I got off the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bedford.

September 19th: Bedford, Pennsylvania to Chalfont, Pennsylvania

The last day of the drive was pretty short -- about a four hour drive through Harrisburg...a bit foggier on this day:
